COOPERATIVE EDUCATION
Your Window on the World of Work
Cooperative Education is a unique educational experience that promotes skill development, career development, and self-awareness through hands-on experience in a business or institutional setting. Co-operative education develops the "whole person" by bridging the gap between classroom study and the knowledge and skills needed to become a productive member of society and a witness to Christian Catholic faith at work. Students can enroll in a full or half day program
Prerequisites for all Programs: Students must be 16 years of age, have accrued 16 credits and require an interview. Students must also meet Admission Requirements for the Cooperative Education and/or School-to-Career Programs they are applying for.
ONTARIO YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM (OYAP)
The OYAP is a specialized program that enables students who are sixteen years of age or older to meet secondary school diploma requirements while participating in a skilled occupation that requires apprenticeship training leading to a Certificate of Apprenticeship and Journey Person Status. OYAP provides an opportunity for students to explore and work in a skilled occupation starting in grade 11 or grade l2, through the Cooperative Education mode of delivery. The student may or may not be formally registered as an apprentice while attending secondary school. Students will be using the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities Apprenticeship Training Standards for their cooperative education Personalized Placement Learning Plan (PPLP) where applicable.
There are four (4) categories of OYAP Programs offered by the York Catholic District School Board:
· Off Campus OYAP which is delivered at an accredited College or a Training Institution
· School based OYAP related to the Technological Studies programs that are aligned with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (M.T.C.U.) Training Standards
· School based OYAP related to the Technological Studies programs that are not aligned with the M.T.C.U.
· School based OYAP related to academic subjects.
INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS
The following internship programs will provide students with clear pathways to their potential post-secondary destination whether it is work, apprenticeship, college or university. Career exploration, Health and Safety certification and workplace training in a variety of occupations in manufacturing, construction or hospitality industries is an integral part of the program. The workplace training is implemented through the Cooperative Education mode of delivery. Students in this program will have an opportunity to start their Ontario Youth Apprenticeship (OYAP) as early as Grade 11. Upon successful completion of the two year program (Grades 11-12) students could receive an advance standing in the college pre-apprenticeship course; earn apprenticeship hours, and complete their secondary school graduation diploma at the same time. Students
should consider taking this program in Grades 11 and 12 in order to receive full benefits. For more information and course selection see a guidance counselor, technological studies or cooperative education teacher.
BRIDGES TO MANUFACTURING
Computer Numerical Control (CNC) @Seneca Credit Value 2.00
This two credit half-day course will be offered afternoons at the Seneca College Centre for Advanced Technologies during Semester 2( afternoons). Qualified students will need to travel to this state of the art facility near the 401 and 400 highways where they will be involved in the high tech world of computerized machining. This exciting program will offer the qualified student an opportunity to obtain advanced standing in one Seneca College credit subject (CNC101) in the Manufacturing and Machining Techniques program. Seneca College will also provide access to a scholarship for the top student in the class
Aviation Technology Internship@St. Roberts Credit Value 4.00
This program provides students with the opportunity to explore fundamental elements of aviation maintenance technology through studies of aerodynamics, components of aircraft and their functions, aeronautical hardware and materials, and ground handling of aircraft. Students may have an opportunity to assemble components of a small aircraft under the supervision of their instructor. This program will also provide students with an opportunity to explore careers in aircraft maintenance through work experience. The program will be offered at St. Robert C.H.S. in Semester 1 or 2.
BRIDGES TO CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY
Construction 2002 @Mattamy Homes Credit Value 4.00
This program incorporates a partnership with Mattamy Homes, Canada’s second largest builder. Students will spend Semester 1 on a construction site and be given the opportunity to build a house from foundation to interior finish as part of a team. There will be a full-time teacher/instructor on site. This program is opened to both males and females. Successful students will receive on site credits in: Senior Blueprint Reading; Construction Technology and Construction Coop.
General Carpenter Training @Local 27 Training Centre Credit Value 4.00
Complete your high school while apprenticing as a general carpenter. Acceptance in this program depends upon the recommendation of the home school, academic competency of the student, and the screening process of the local apprenticeship committee(LAC). The successful students will sign an apprenticeship agreement with the LAC and attend the Local 27 training program during Semester 2 of their grade 12 year. While at the training center they complete the Level One In-School apprenticeship course during the first eight weeks, followed by an eight week work experience on a selected construction site. Upon graduation , students may continue to work as full-time apprentices.
Interior and Exterior Finishing @IFS Training Centre Credit Value 4.00
Complete your high school and apprentice in Interior and Exterior Finishing Skilled Professions. Explore careers such as Drywall Acoustic Mechanic and Lather, Drywall Finisher and Plasterer, and Stucco Applicator. Acceptance in this program depends upon the recommendation of the home school, academic competency of the interested student, and the screening process of the Local Apprenticeship Committee(LAC). The successful students will sign an apprenticeship agreement with the LAC and attend the IFS Training Centre during Semester 2 of their grade 12 year. While at the training centre they will complete the Level One In-School apprenticeship program during the first eight weeks, followed by an eight week work experience on a selected construction site. Upon graduation , students may continue to work as full-time apprentices.
Horticulturist (Landscaping) @Humber College Credit Value 4.00
Complete your high school while apprenticing as a Horticulturist at Humber College. Network with Landscape and Lawn Care contractors, Garden Centres, and Landscape Designers. Acceptance in this program depends upon the recommendation of the home school, academic competency of the interested student and the screening process of the committee. Successful candidates will sign an apprenticeship agreement and attend Humber College during Semester 2 of their grade 12 year. While at the college they will complete the Level One In-School apprenticeship program, followed by an eight week work experience.

BRIDGES TO HOSPITALITY
COOK @Humber College Credit Value 4.00
Complete your high school while apprenticing as a Cook at Humber College. Acceptance in this program depends upon the recommendation of the home school, academic competency of the interested student and the screening process of the Local Apprenticeship committee(LAC). Successful candidates will sign an apprenticeship agreement with the LAC and attend Humber College during Semester 2 of their grade 12 year. Students will attend classes at Humber College 3 days a week and be assigned to a related work experience 2 days per week. While in school they will complete their Level One In-School apprenticeship program. Students should continue their apprenticeship after graduation.
