Operation Veteran Launched at St.E

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, this October, the students of St.Elizabeth are showing gratitude by supporting our veteran men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces through Operation Veteran- a Canadian organization aimed at feeding hungry veterans. Through an informational campaign, led by students from the Vimy 2017 Delegation, the school community is being educated on the needs of today’s veterans by posters, cafeteria display, daily announcements and various social media. The motto of the campaign being: To those who served, give what they deserve.  The Vimy delegates spent over a year preparing for their journey to Vimy Ridge in April 2017 where they paid homage to the fallen of that battle and WWI.  This year they wanted to focus on the living… those who served and survived and continue to face many challenges due to their service.   It is our hope that our school will be able to raise at least 100 meals toward helping to feed our Veteran men and women, in honour of the 100th Anniversary of the battles of Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele.

The fact is that, one in ten veterans who fought in the Afghanistan War has been diagnosed with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) or an OSI (Operational Stress Injury). Mental health issues are one of the leading causes of homelessness among veterans, who make up 5% of Canada’s homeless population. With all our help, we can ease the effects of homelessness and hunger, which are linked to this growing issue.

On October 18th students will pay $2 to take off their uniform for those who served in uniform!  This paid civvies day- Warrior Wednesday, will culminate the awareness and support campaign. Funds will be collected and formally donated by representatives of our delegation to Dr.Paul Kavanagh (founder of Operation Veteran) at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa on November 11th– Remembrance Day. We hope to draw inspiration from the Invictus [Unconquerable] spirit of our Wounded Warriors and do our duty in showing our thanks and support. Please join us by making a donation and helping us say thank you in this month of Thanksgiving… Give so that a Veteran Can live!
